Designed by architect Thomas Blackburn in 1825, the Blackburn opened its doors in 1828 as the Western Lunatic Asylum, which offered a utopian-style of care that unfortunately was short-lived. Designed by architect Thomas Blackburn in 1825, the Blackburn opened its doors in 1828 as the Western Lunatic Asylum, which offered a utopian-style of care that unfortunately was short-lived. Thomas Blackburn was a protege of Thomas Jefferson, and drew inspiration from the Greek Revival style, which he learned from Jefferson while constructing the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
The Blackburn is a member of the Historic Hotels of America since its establishment.
